our area localities have hired Harris Corp. to replace an aging public safety communications system in a contract worth almost $12 million. The work will replace the 15-year-old shared radio infrastructure between the cities of Lynchburg and Bedford and the counties of Amherst and Bedford with a higher standard of digital communication called P25.

Pittsylvania County has awarded a contract to Harris Corp. for nearly $10.7 million for equipment and radios.

Communications interoperability is not an option, it is a necessity. Without it, Coast Guard vessels cannot communicate on an interagency or inter-service basis. Since large scale upgrades can take several years to complete, interoperability capacities need to be addressed to streamline communications between new and legacy systems.

It’s a familiar scenario some of Alberta’s first rsponders currently have to deal with when it comes to carrying out their responsibilities: existing provincial public safety radio networks often have difficulty communicating with one another during rapidly changing events such as a police pursuit.
